Gallantry Awards

The following awards were made to pilots associated with Windermere:-

George Cross

Paul Robertson. In 1918, whilst an observer for endeavouring to extricate the pilot following a crash. Instructor at Windermere in 1916-1917. Flight Sub-Lieutenant.

Distinguished Service Order

William Dickson. In 1918, for having taken part in the first strike from an aircraft carrier. Also the Air Force Cross in 1922, for services as a test pilot at Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. Learned to fly seaplanes at Windermere in 1916, later Marshal of the Royal Air Force.

James Ferrand. In 1915, for the first seaplane to shoot down another. Instructor at Windermere 1915-1916, later Major.

Distinguished Service Cross

Henry Boswell. In 1917, for the first aerial sinking of a submarine by the Royal Naval Air Service along with Charles Morrish. Learned to fly seaplanes at Windermere in 1916, later Captain.

John Hume. In 1918 posthumously, for services in Mesopotamia. Learned to fly seaplanes at Windermere in 1915, later Flight Lieutenant.

Charles McNicoll. In 1917, for services in convoy protection and combatting submarines. Learned to fly seaplanes at Windermere in 1916, Flight Sub-Lieutenant.

Charles Morrish. In 1917, for the first aerial sinking of a submarine by the Royal Naval Air Service along with Henry Boswell. Learned to fly seaplanes at Windermere in 1916, later Captain.

Guy Price. In 1918 and Bar, having downed 12 aircraft. An Instructor at Windermere in 1916, later Flight Commander.

Herbert Stanley-Adams. In 1917, for reconnaissance and bombing flights in the Eastern Mediterranean. Pilot at Windermere 1911-1914, later Lieutenant Colonel.

Distinguished Flying Cross

Victor Bessette. In 1918, for services over the North Sea. Flew seaplanes at Windermere in 1916 and obtained his Aviator’s Certificate there, later Flight Lieutenant.

Harold Gonyon. In 1918, for bombing a submarine. Learned to fly seaplanes at Windermere in 1916, later Flight Lieutenant.

Cooper Pattinson. In 1918, captain of a flying boat which shot down an airship. Resident of Windermere. Flight Lieutenant.

– All 3 were included in the first list of DFCs published in the London Gazette.

Wings Over Windermere

Edward Wakefield described flight from water as ‘Something that beckoned …’
