There is now a Book of Remembrance on this website dedicated to the 20 pilots associated with Windermere who gave their lives during 1914-1918.

Flight Lieutenant John Hume, awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, was killed on this day in 1916. Following training at Windermere, he was posted to Royal Naval Air Stations at Hendon (twice), Fishguard, Calshot, Mesopotamia (where he was a Squadron Commander), and Westgate. Killed in an accident when his seaplane dived into the sea, for which the Court of Enquiry was not able to assign a reason.
