Today is the centenary of Captain Arthur Wakefield (a brother of Captain Edward Wakefield who commissioned Waterbird) as President of the Fell & Rock Climbing Club handing over the title deeds of a tract of some 1,184 acres, including the tops of Great Gable, Kirk Fell, Green Gable, Brandreth, Grey Notts, Base Brown, Seathwaite Fell, Glaramara, Allen Crags, Great End, Broad Crag and Lingmell, to a representative of the National Trust during the annual FRCC dinner at the Sun Hotel, Coniston. He said “These title deeds represent the lives of those of our members who died for their country, men with whom in many cases we have walked over these fells, and whose friendship we treasured”.
